The Technical Director, Frontend & AI Engineering is a highly technical, hands-on leader responsible for advancing modern frontend architectures and AI-driven user experiences. This role leads the development of high-quality, scalable client experiences while embedding AI capabilities into products and engineering workflows.This leader sets the standard for frontend excellence and AI integration, combining deep expertise in user-facing technologies with practical application of AI/ML to deliver differentiated customer value.<h2>Day to day, you'll...</h2><h3>Frontend Architecture & Engineering</h3><ul><li>Define and evolve frontend architecture, frameworks, and design systems.</li><li>Ensure delivery of performant, accessible, and scalable web and mobile experiences.</li><li>Standardize patterns across teams for consistency and maintainability.</li></ul><h3>AI Engineering & Integration</h3><ul><li>Lead the application of AI/ML (including generative AI) across user experiences and developer tooling.</li><li>Partner with Data/ML teams to productionize models and integrate intelligent capabilities.</li><li>Guide prompt engineering, model selection, and evaluation strategies.</li></ul><h3>Hands-On Development Leadership</h3><ul><li>Contribute to critical frontend and AI-driven feature development.</li><li>Review architecture and code to ensure high standards in performance and usability.</li><li>Solve complex technical challenges spanning frontend systems and AI integrations.</li></ul><h3>Experience Innovation</h3><ul><li>Drive experimentation with AI-powered features, personalization, and automation.</li><li>Establish frameworks for rapid prototyping and iterative delivery (aligned with your current experiment-first motion).</li><li>Balance innovation with production-grade reliability and scalability.</li></ul><h3>Standards & Best Practices</h3><ul><li>Establish best practices for frontend engineering, UI performance, accessibility, and testing.</li><li>Define patterns for integrating AI responsibly, securely, and at scale.</li><li>Promote consistency across frameworks, component libraries, and design systems.</li></ul><h3>Mentorship & Capability Building</h3><ul><li>Develop frontend and AI engineering talent through coaching, pairing, and structured learning.</li><li>Raise engineering maturity across teams through standards, reviews, and thought leadership.</li><li>Influence hiring strategy for high-impact technical talent.</li></ul><h3>Cross-Functional Collaboration</h3><ul><li>Partner closely with Product, Design, Data Science, and Platform teams.</li><li>Align frontend and AI capabilities to business priorities and customer outcomes.</li></ul> What you'll bring to the team... <h3>Experience</h3><ul><li>10+ years in software engineering, with deep experience in frontend development.</li><li>Experience building and scaling modern web applications (React, Angular, etc.).</li><li>Proven experience integrating AI/ML capabilities into production systems.</li></ul><h3>Technical Skills</h3><ul><li>Expertise in modern frontend frameworks, performance optimization, and UX patterns.</li><li>Strong understanding of APIs, backend integration, and full-stack systems.</li><li>Experience with AI tooling, LLMs, and model integration (prompting, APIs, inference pipelines).</li></ul><h3>Leadership</h3><ul><li>Strong technical leadership with the ability to influence across teams.</li><li>Experience mentoring engineers and driving engineering best practices.</li></ul> Why work for us Since 1955, we have been leaders in tax preparation, financial services, and small business solutions. Pay Range Information The pay range for this position is listed below. Local minimum wage laws apply. This information is posted pursuant to local requirements to provide applicants with information about what they might be eligible to receive. Individual pay decisions will depend on job-related factors such as experience, education, skill, performance, and geographic location where work will be performed. Successful candidates may be able to participate in one or more incentive compensation or short-term incentive plans, which could generate additional earnings in accordance with the terms of each plan. Qualifying associates can enroll themselves and/or their eligible dependents in medical and prescription drug coverage; can participate in the H&R Block Retirement Savings Plan (401(k) Plan), the Employee Assistance Program, (virtual) fitness center programs, and the associate discount program; are automatically enrolled in Business Travel Accident Insurance; and receive Associate Tax Prep benefit. Pay Range $154,900.00 - $263,300.00/Yr.
