Criminal Investigator (Special Agent) Direct Hire

This position is open to IRS Criminal Investigation (CI) Division applicants and involves potential access to sensitive information and field investigations. Duties

The Criminal Investigator plans and conducts investigations relative to criminal statutes of tax administration and financial crimes. Responsibilities may include access to Sensitive Compartmented Information (SCI), involvement in Top Secret Special Access Programs (SAP), and coordination with DOJ and IRS foreign attachments. Other duties include testifying as a government witness, assisting U.S. Attorneys, conducting collateral inquiries, and identifying large areas of noncompliance through information evaluation.

This position has career progression. Progression may allow non-competitive promotions as career advances (e.g., from GS-05 to GS-11 over time).

Conditions of employment

  • Medical, physical, and hearing requirements apply; candidates must pass medical examination and meet vision/hearing standards.

Qualification standards

Basic requirements differ by grade (GL-07 and GL-09). Criteria include specialized experience related to criminal investigations, ability to collect and analyze evidence, and the ability to prepare investigations and reports. Education may substitute for experience under specific conditions, with requirements for accounting/finance coursework and related fields. Special requirements include maximum entry age provisions and possession of a valid driver’s license, firearm proficiency, and successful completion of the Special Agent Basic Training Curriculum at FLETC if applicable.

Education

Submit transcripts or equivalents if education is used to meet requirements. Foreign education may be used if it is deemed equivalent to U.S. education; provide proof as required.

Probationary period (3 years) may apply. Benefits and telework eligibility vary by position. LEAP pay may apply. Travel, relocation and security clearance requirements may be applicable. All medical, security, and suitability requirements must be met upon appointment.

Tour of duty: Day Shift. Travel up to 50% or less may be required. Ensure eligibility for benefits based on full-time/part-time status.
